Each year, the Congregation Bet Haverim community and our guests show incredible generosity through our annual food and supply drive. This High Holy Day season, we invite you to continue that tradition by contributing to three meaningful initiatives: the Toco Hills Community Alliance, Glenn’s Snack in a Backpack, and Blessing Bags. Please consider bringing donations for all three causes. Items can be dropped off at any of our High Holy Days services at Glenn Memorial or at CBH.
We are continuing to support and partner with the Toco Hills Community Alliance.
Toco Hills Community Alliance: makes available emergency food assistance to individuals and families in need in the northeast communities of Atlanta. They sponsor and promote assistance programs and services that will result in greater economic stability and independence for those individuals and families in need. THCA provides opportunities for individuals and organizations to be of service to their neighbors by helping individuals and families in need.
Blessing Bags
Last year we collected items for congregants to make bags to take with them to give to those in need. It was a great success and we will be collecting items to support making the bags again in the Fellowship Hall on Yom Kippur.
What are Blessing bags? They are care packages filled with essential items that are distributed to people that are unhoused or those in need. They typically include items like toiletries, non-perishable food, and warm accessories, providing basic necessities and a sense of comfort. These bags are a practical way to show compassion and support, offering tangible help to individuals facing difficult circumstances.
Glenn’s Snack in a Backpack Program
Glenn’s Snack in a Backpack ministry provides food on Fridays during the school year to children who are at risk of hunger on the weekends. In Georgia, one in 7 children goes to bed hungry; and children are most vulnerable on the weekends without access to school meals.
During the past year Snack . . .
- Served approximately 400 children a week including students at Hope-Hill, Perkerson and Bethune elementary schools as well as students at GVP (Global Village Project) and additional refugee children in the Clarkston area.
- Distributed more than 16,000 bags of food and received more than 60,000 lbs of food from the Atlanta Community Food Bank
- Included fresh fruit in the bags for each child
- Engaged volunteers of all ages to set-up, recycle, pack and load bags into vehicles on Thursdays; make school deliveries on Fridays; place orders with the Food Bank; develop weekly packing plans; unload Food Bank deliveries on Thursday mornings; shop at the DeKalb Farmers Market and grocery stores for fresh fruit, produce and other items unavailable at the Food Bank; monitor inventory; and much more!
Come join us in this joyous ministry! For more information about the program and how you can be involved, email SnackatGlenn@gmail.com.
Drop-off: Please bring items to the registration desk at the front of Glenn Memorial UMC, or the Fellowship Hall.
You can also drop off at the table with oneg donations at the School Building or at CBH on Rosh Hashanah Day 2.
