Grief and Resilience: a Tisha B'Av Commemoration

Tisha B'Av (ט׳ באב, "the Ninth of [the Hebrew month of] Av")  commemorates the destruction of both the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem, which occurred about 655 years apart, but on the same Hebrew calendar date.  Other calamities have also occurred on this date, including the expulsions of Jews from England and Spain, in the years 1290 and 1492, respectively.  As such, it has become a Jewish day of mourning.

Please join us on Saturday, August 6, at 7:30 pm in the CBH Sanctuary and on Zoom to commemorate Tisha B’Av.

The following practices are observed on Tisha B’Av:

The chanting of the book of Lamentations.  Shana Cohen and Rabbi Mike will be chanting.  If you would also like to participate, let Hailey know by emailing her here.

A dimming of lights to reflect our sadness.  You may bring a flashlight by which to read texts and prayers.

Refraining from friendly greetings and gestures.

Sitting on the floor.  Feel free to bring a cushion or low stool.

Refraining from eating and drinking, with the obvious exception of medical necessity.

We will also be including readings that reflect modern crises.  Space will also be provided for folks to process how the ritual lands for them.

All are welcome.
Please RSVP below if you plan to attend in person.
