Encircling Grief & Gratitude: A Meditative Tisha B'Av Artshop with artist Elysa Fenenbock

On our Jewish calendar is a day where we gather to pour out our collective losses. Tisha B'Av has powerful resonance this year.

Artist Elysa Fenebock reflects, "Like never in my life, I see us grieving together apart as we lose people, hugs, jobs, activities, dreams, even our models of reality."

We have been learning to let go, to surrender, to forgive, and to find acceptance for what is. We are sorting through our memories, releasing and forgetting what doesn't serve us, and preserving what we wish to keep. We lament and seek hope.

Mother Nature reminds us of our delicate vulnerability, and gives us a clearer view of our profound interconnectedness. Meanwhile, the earth is healing. Nature reminds us how quickly everything can change and how easy healing can be.

In this Artshop, we will enter a state of making meditation, creating art in memory of what we lose and what we love. By collecting materials that are found in and around our homes, we will engage in art and rituals that helps us reflect on this moment. We will breathe into our senses for inspiration and honor the waves of emotion, especially the grief and gratitude, that we experience on this journey.

All levels are welcome in this interactive, creative living room. Participants will be invited to contribute their works into both a congregational global digital art quilt that captures the mood of these transformative times.

With over a decade as a designer and a lifetime as an artist, Elysa Fenenbock has focused on making and holding space for healing and transformation. She creates interactive installations for healing, teaches workshops and courses that ignite creativity and spark transformation, and interweaves play, mindfulness, and loving kindness into objects that usher us toward deeper insight, compassion and forgiveness. As an Edmund Hillary Global Impact Fellow, she aims to kindle our globally minded creativity toward having a fair, responsible impact. As Google’s first designer-in-residence, she facilitated human-centered design processes and spearheaded social impact projects. Elysa also lectures at the Stanford d.school and is the co-founder of Design Mystics.
