Seeds of Light: A Celebration of Legacy and Pride

A Ritual for turning 70/Our Founders Turning 70

On June 28th, LGBTQ folks around the country will be observing the 50th anniversary of Stonewall. This revolutionary act coalesced a growing LGBTQ civil rights movement in this country that planted so many seeds of possibility.

Not every revolutionary act was a riot: LGBTQ-founded churches and synagogues began to spring up in its wake, in about the time that it takes a seed to become a sapling.  Bet Haverim was one of those courageous communities that was committed to celebrating and honoring the life-cycles of LGBTQ Jews and their loved ones.

We have been on the forefront of Jews who have created or reconstructed rituals to observe moments that speak to our lives. It is why 20 years ago, five LGBTQ members decided to celebrate their 50th birthdays here at CBH --and why most of them will gather again for us to celebrate their 70th.

Founding and early members Paul Glickstein, Robert Gross, Jeri Kagel, Bob Schwartz and Jack Schiffman chose to mark their milestone birthday then and do so now. While Jack will be joining us in a brief written message, Joyce Kinnard will be joining them. They were 20 when Stonewall happened and nearly 35 when CBH was founded. Their lives and histories are intertwined with ours.

Join Rabbi Josh, Lay Cantor Gayanne Geurin and the CBH Band as we honor the 50th anniversary of Stonewall and celebrate the 70th birthdays of these members with music, blessings and the offerings of their wisdom of entering into this auspicious decade.
