LEARN TO CHANT TORAH
Sundays, 10:15-11:30am at The Friends School of Atlanta
March 11, April 22, May 6, more TBD
Join us as we explore the ancient and fascinating world of trope, or cantillation, a system of melodic markings used by new and seasoned readers all over the world to chant from the Torah.
Chanting, also called "leyning", has many benefits, from deepening your connection to the weekly Torah portion, to stepping up your leadership role in Shabbat services, to helping a child prepare for a bar or bat mitzvah. Most importantly, chanting makes it possible for our community to better appreciate the meaning and musicality of our holiest text. Led by Amy Robertson and Shana Cohen, this study group will work collaboratively through The Art of Torah Cantillation, a concise, stress-free introduction to the most commonly encountered markings, along with some of the more exotic ones.
Whether you're totally new to trope, recall it vaguely from your own bar/bat mitzvah journey, or are a veteran Torah reader still relying on recordings to memorize your aliyah, this is the group for you!
No cost.
RSVP and Questions: Please email shana.cohen11@gmail.com by March 8 for more information.
*Note: We will use the modified Binder style of chanting, the standard Torah trope system for Reform and Reconstructionist communities. Additionally, we will focus on the melodies used for most weekday and Shabbat readings, not for High Holidays or for chanting the Haftorah.
Hebrew proficiency is strongly recommended.
