What is the Daffodil Project?
Daffodil Project is an initiative of Am Yisrael Chai, a nonprofit Holocaust Education and Genocide Awareness Organization. Am Yisrael Chai has developed The Daffodil Project, a worldwide project empowering Holocaust Education. Each year we host a community event in Atlanta, Georgia to commemorate the Holocaust and to celebrate survival and success. The Daffodil Project aspires to build a worldwide Living Holocaust Memorial by planting 1.5 million Daffodils in memory of the children who perished in the Holocaust and in support for children suffering in humanitarian crises in the world today. Why Daffodils?
The shape and color of the daffodils represent the yellow stars that Jews were forced to wear during the Holocaust. Yellow is the color of remembrance. Daffodils represent our poignant hope for the future. They are resilient and return with a burst of color each spring, signifying hope, renewal and beauty. The daffodils also honor those who survived the Holocaust and went on to build new lives after this dark and difficult period.
Planting Daffodils
Daffodils are easy to grow perennials that will bloom every year in the spring. Pick a spot in your yard with sun for at least six hours with good drainage. Then measure your site and figure on 10 daffodils per square foot. It would be nice to plant in your front yard so that friends and neighbors can enjoy their beauty and see the sign. We will provide planting instructions with your bulbs in October. Since daffodils are perennials that only bloom for 3-4 weeks, usually in March, you can plant annuals over them to flower in summer and fall until frost kills them in fall.
