An Introduction to Sage-ing: The Inner Work of Spiritual Eldering

Thursday Evenings, October 17, 24 & 31, November 7, 14, & 21
from 7:00 – 8:30 pm

At
Congregation Bet Haverim,
2074 Lavista Rd. | Atlanta, GA 30329

Unless we die young, we will all grow old, or even very old, with all the attendant physical and mental changes and losses. Facing our mortality challenges us in every way— spiritually, mentally, emotionally and physically. In this class we will draw on contemplative methods to learn how to move from simply aging to Sage-ing—to manifesting the inner wise Elder.

Over the six meetings, we will have an opportunity to overcome our denial of aging, broaden our skills for inner work through creating an ethical will, journaling, meditation, and other reflective exercises, in a safe and sacred space. By attending to body, feelings, mind and spirit we will continue the Yom Kippur work of life repair—offering release, relationship healing and forgiveness, to ourselves and others. We will open to finding the gems in the difficult memories and the lessons from difficult teachers. Clarifying what brings meaning to our lives now will inform how we might serve as guides, mentors, and agents of healing and reconciliation for the planet, our communities, and families as we approach the end of our days.

Elizabeth Cohen taught meditation and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction for nearly three decades and has personally worked with this approach to eldering for many years. Elizabeth now offers spiritual direction and is in her last semester of a three-year training through Aleph: The Alliance for Jewish Renewal.
