What is Gender, Anyway?

Sunday, February 12, 2017 16 Shevat 5777

4:30 PM - 6:00 PMCBH Lavista

Curious about gender diversity?  Hoping to become a better ally to gender-diverse and transgender people?  Have questions about gender and sex but don’t know where to start? Historian of sexuality and medicine and longtime LGBTQIA activist Hanne Blank leads two workshops where you can bring your curiosity and questions and build your knowledge and allyship.

Everyone has a gender… how much do you know about yours?  In this workshop we’ll talk about gendered identities, gendered expectations, and where they come from.  We’ll discuss gender and sex (and why they’re not the same thing), how gender intersects with sexuality (or not!), learn about the many different types of gender nonconformity, and get creative about ways of expressing and enjoying gender in the world.  Bring 2 wearable items you might use for a Purim costume and your questions.

Hanne Blank is an activist, educator, and historian of sexuality and medicine whose books include Virgin: The Untouched History (Bloomsbury, 2007) and Straight: The Surprisingly Short History of Heterosexuality (Beacon Press, 2012). She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. at Emory University, where she researches the history of feminist health activism in the Deep South and is a Visiting Instructor in the Department of History.
