Cultivating the Soul: An 6-Session Journey into Mussar

Mussar is a Jewish path of ethical and spiritual practice that asks a simple but profound question:
How do I live my values—every day?

In this six-session course, MaryBeth Hayes will guide participants through the core principles of Mussar, exploring timeless Jewish teachings alongside practical, modern applications.

Together, we’ll examine key character traits (middot) and engage in reflective practices designed to support personal growth, mindfulness, and meaningful change.

  •  Open to all levels
  • Text-based and experiential
  •  Practical tools for everyday life

If you are looking for a thoughtful, grounded approach to spiritual growth—and a community to learn with—this Mussar journey is for you.

Class will meet every other week.

We will strongly encourage a chavruta partnership to work with a partner or a group of three during the off week to explore the middot more fully, and we will provide an outline for you. If you prefer, we can hold a small-group meeting at CBH during the off week. Groups or pairs will be determined after the first week.

In addition, those who get the most out of these classes commit to a daily spiritual practice of journaling. It does not have to be long, but it is a time when you reflect on the principle we are exploring over the two weeks.

The curriculum will be determined based on the group. Examples of our sessions could include
Anavah (humility, balanced self), Guvurah (wise boundaries, strength), Chesed (loving connection), Histaphkut (simplicity), anger, Zerizut (alacrity), Nedivut (generosity), Yosher (honesty), Ahava (love) and you can google middot to find many more options.

Every Other week beginning on February 12, then the following February 26, March 12, March 26, April 9, April 23 7-8:30PM at CBH
