Kristallnacht Program with Roberta Lynn Wechsler
Havdalah, Saturday, November 9th

In 1944, Murray Lynn ztz”l and his family were deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau, where his mother and three brothers were immediately taken to be murdered in the gas chamber.   Miraculously, Murray survived.  Join Murray’s daughter and friend-of-CBH, Roberta Lynn Wechsler for video and other remembrances of Murray and his legacy.  Roberta will also discuss the "Pyramid of Hate" as it relates to all marginalized groups – cultural, racial or LGBTQIA — and how understanding it can help us to stand up for justice.

We will also have a showing of the artworks of The Stolpersteine Project, initiated by German artist Gunter Demnig in 1992, which seeks to honor individuals at the last place they freely chose to live, work, or study before becoming victims of Nazi terror, forced euthanasia, eugenics, deportation to concentration or extermination camps, or escaping persecution through emigration or suicide. Demnig emphasizes the importance of remembrance, stating, “A person is only forgotten when his or her name is forgotten,” a sentiment drawn from the Talmud.

Michael Friedrichs-Friedländer, 69, the craftsman responsible for creating each Stolperstein, believes that criticism of the project is unwarranted. “I can’t think of a better form of remembrance,” he asserts. “To read the stone, you must bow before the victim.”

As of June 2023, the project has installed 100,000 Stolpersteine, making it the world's largest decentralized memorial.
