Joy Ladin: Journey of Understanding

Tuesday, August 15, 2017 23 Av 5777

7:00 PM - 9:00 PMCBH - 2074 Lavista Rd

Join Us on a Journey of Understanding... a presentation and discussion on the intersections of gender and religion, tradition and community.

Special Guest Speaker: Joy Ladin, Ph.D., author of Through the Door of Life: A Jewish Journey Between Genders.

As the first openly transgender employee of an Orthodox Jewish institution, Joy wants to engage politically and culturally conservative groups in respectful conversations about gender and how gender is connected to religion, tradition, and community. Her purpose in these conversations is not to change or judge others’ beliefs or ways of life, or to advocate for LGBTQ rights. Her goal is to promote understanding by listening, learning, and demonstrating respect for others’ views, to learn what gender means and how it works in their families and communities, and to understand the concerns – practical, religious, and emotional – that arise when they consider transgender people and issues. Through these conversations, she hopes that we can help stitch back together a nation that, when it comes to gender, religion, tradition, and community, often feels like it is being ripped apart.

Please RSVP for planning purposes.
